Tiananmen Square

Getting there: Taxis are not permitted to stop near Tiananmen Square, so your best bet on transport there is by taking the subway or walking. The two subway stations nearest to the Square are on line 1, Tiananmen East (116) and Tiananmen West (117), each a five minute walk away. Alternatively, take a pleasant walk from the south entrance to Wangfujing Street will take about 20 minutes to reach the Square.

Great Wall
The Great Wall of China is one of the few man made structures visible from space and probably the most famous landmark in China. You can get to a few different parts of the Great Wall within a few hours by bus from Beijing. The most popular section for tourists is the Badaling part, as it is well managed and safe. Some sections of the wall have steps and railings while other sections are have gradual steep slopes. Depending on which time of year you visit the Great Wall, you should be prepared for extreme temperatures. The sun is scorching in the summertime, while in winter you will have a bitter wind and freezing temperatures. You do not have to be a fitness fanatic to visit the Great Wall, even walking a few steps of the Wall is an achievement – not everyone can say they have walked on one of the modern wonders of the world!

Getting there: Jump aboard bus number 919 from various places around Beijing or negotiate a round trip with a local taxi driver. There are also many tour buses operating trips to the great Wall.

Forbidden City
The Forbidden City, which is also known as the Imperial Palace, is an enormous compound of halls, temples and homes which make up the former residence of the ancient emperors. The vast complex is alleged to hold 9,999 rooms and is divided into a northern and southern part.  The southern half is where the ceremonies and entertaining took place whereas the northern area was the emperor’s private residence accessible only to a select few important people.

Getting there: It will cost you around 60 RMB to enter the Forbidden City. You can easily spend a few hours wandering around admiring the decor, for an additional 20 RMB you can hire an audio tour in English to learn more about the artifacts you are looking at. The Imperial Palace is located behind Tiananmen Square. Take the Tiananmen East (116) or Tiananmen West (117) Line 1 subway to get there, and walk behind Mao’s picture to reach the Forbidden City.

The Summer Palace
The Summer Palace was constructed as a place of rest and recreation for emperors’ in the North West area of Beijing. Today the site is open as a public park and is one of the most impressive places to visit in Beijing. Stroll along the walkway which circles the enormous lake and climb up to the hillside temples for breathtaking views over the lake and surrounding area. You can even hire a boat to explore the lake but get there early as boat rental stops at around 4.30pm.

Getting there: A taxi ride to the Summer Palace will take about an hour from the centre of Beijing and should cost no more than 50 RMB. A journey by bus will take around and hour and a half costing no more than 7 RMB. The Summer Palace entrance fee is 30RMB.

Beijing Zoo
Beijing zoo is famous for its large collection of pandas and is home to a vast range of animals but be prepared to pay a bit more if you want to see the panda display as this is not included in the zoo ticket price.

Getting there: The zoo is not far from the centre of Beijing, a taxi will cost you no more than 25 RMB. The nearest subway is Xi Zhi Men station (201) on Line 2 followed by walking 20 minutes to the zoo entrance.

The Temple of Heaven
The Temple of Heaven is a large leafy park and temple site situated south of Beijing. The tall wooden tower is the centre piece of the park and it is thought that the structure was built using no nails. Another sight not to miss is the echo wall, rumour has it that if you stand next to the wall and talk at it, the words are carried along the wall and can be heard from any point along the wall. The Temple of Heaven site also attracts locals who come to practice their performance skills, expect to see singers, dancers and martial arts enthusiasts.

Getting there: The best transport to the Temple of Heaven is by taxi which should not cost more than 20 RMB from the centre of Beijing. An entrance ticket to the park is quite cheap but you’ll have to pay extra for the attractions such as the wooden tower and the echo wall. Alternatively you can buy a combination ticket for 35 RMB which lets you into everything.

Wangfujing
A walk along the colourful bustling neon lit Wangfujing will take you about 30 minutes if you do not get distracted by the many shops. Considered the central heart of the city the street has two main shopping malls and home to a number of large department stores, souvenir shops and street food stalls. Most of the shops shut down around 9pm and while the night market stays open later.

Getting there: The nearest subway is Line 1 Wangfujing (118) station.

The CCTV Tower
The CCTV tower is home to many TV and Radio station broadcasts. From the top of the tower you can see a wide view of western Beijing. There are two levels to the tower an observation deck and a revolving restaurant which is reasonably priced. Across the road from the base of the tower is a quiet park where you can rent boats or take a leisurely walk along the waterfront.

Getting there: The tower can be reached by subway at the Gong Zhu Fen (110) Line 1 station and walking 20 minutes. Alternatively you can get a taxi to the tower from the centre of Beijing which should cost no more than 25 RMB.
