As the world becomes more and more globally interdependent, it becomes more apparent how studying abroad can open doors that would otherwise not be opened. For the past twenty years, international education has consistently increased. As such, many students no longer fall into the once common “junior year abroad” experience. Students are now studying abroad at numerous stages of their pursuit to further their education, and some of these students are repeat study-abroad students.

The traditional mold of only studying in English-speaking countries appears to have been broken as well as students who study abroad no longer feel they are held to the confines of these particular countries due to communication gaps. Technology has, and continues, to allow students to study in almost any country in the world without the fear of not being able to bridge the communication gaps that once held them back. China is a prime example of this trend.

While almost half of all United States students who choose to study abroad still head for those popular western European destinations like Italy and France, China has seen a marked increase in the number of American students who are selecting China as their first choice of places to study abroad in. There has been a significant increase in the number of students who are choosing both Brazil and India as their host countries of study as well.

It should be noted that although the numbers appear to be increasing in these non-western European countries, the number of students that are still selecting the western European countries as a place to further their education hasn’t suffered any drastic decline in numbers. It’s true the numbers are down, but not in any significant way that would bring them into the spotlight. Three countries that did show a marked decrease in students studying abroad were Cuba, Russia and the Netherlands. Why this is so is not apparent, though it could be speculated for a variety of reasons including politic, and economical.

Interestingly, there does seem to be a trend of students choosing to study abroad more so during the end of the first and the beginning of the second semester each year, and their stay in the foreign countries usually last only one trimester. Programs that fall within the short-term category appear to be a big draw for student who want further their education abroad.
